Historical Collect
Almighty and everlasting God, you have given us grace to make the confession of a true faith. We acknowledge your glorious eternal Trinity, and we adore the unity of your majestic work. Defend us by this faith from all adversity and opposition to your way; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Thematic Collect
Majestic Trinity, mystery of Three-in-One and One-in-Three, we worship you. Before time, your love burst forth creating the world in which you took delight. Strengthen us in our faith, defend us from all evil and temptation, and bring us into the everlasting presence of your love; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.
The Common Thread
The door of life opens through keeping Christ Jesus’ word. This is not the doing of things but the response of faith that believes Jesus has done everything necessary for life and salvation. Faith is not mere intellectual assent but a real trust that God in Christ, who existed before Abraham was born, or for that matter, before Adam was created, and who was with God in the beginning, and is himself God, has breathed eternal life and his Holy Spirit into the life spirit of believers. This is God’s plan, so that we may live in confident hope of deliverance from sin and death. Just as God made the heavens and the earth, things that seem almost timeless to us, he will remake us as everlasting beings. For he cares far more for mankind than he does the moon and the stars. He who was in the beginning, who established those heavens and delights in human kind, is faithful to keep his promises.
First Reading • Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31
Wisdom makes her appeal to everyone. She calls from all the common places of humanity. The unspoken call seems to be for humanity to respond to wisdom. Pay attention! The Lord possessed wisdom before creation. Wisdom was brought forth before all creation. God used wisdom in creation, and she rejoiced in all that “I AM” created.
Psalm • Psalm 8:1-9
The name of the Lord, that name (Exod 3:14) which Jesus uses for himself (John 8:58), is majestic in all the earth. This is God, whom we worship today!
Second Reading • Acts 2:14a, 22-36
In our lessons today, we see Jesus elevated over the patriarchs. In the Gospel Lesson, Jesus says he existed before Abraham, therefore before Moses as well. In the lesson from the Epistle we understand that Jesus is higher than King David, as David is dead and buried but David’s Lord, the Messiah, is risen from the dead. The upshot is that Jesus is both Lord and Savior.
Gospel • John 8:48-59
Accused of being demon possessed, Jesus explains in no uncertain terms who he is by saying, “Before Abraham was, I am.” His accusers understood immediately his reference to being God. Jesus said, “I AM,” using of himself the name of God. In Exodus 3:14, God names himself for Moses. “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.'” The name of God, Yahweh, means “I am.” When Jesus says what seems at first to mean that he existed before Abraham, he was saying in clear terms that he not only preexisted but that he is God, the great I AM. Essentially, Jesus said to the people, I AM has sent I AM to you.
